Cold Weather Storage Tips

Texas may not get much in the way of winter weather, however we all know that it can get cold during the winter months.

Some of your outdoor items need special preparation for storage when the temperature is expected to drop.

Here are some cold weather storage tips to help you get through the winter.

Cars and Motorcycles (that won’t be driven during the winter months):

  • Go ahead and clean it up. Get anything off the paint that can cause damage over time, such as bird droppings or sap.
  • Make sure that your oil is freshly changed. You don’t want your engine parts sitting in gunk for several months.
  • Make sure that you have a low temperature, cold weather formula of coolant.
  • Fill up the gas tank and make sure to add a fuel stabilizer. This will help your seals keep from drying out.
  • Keep the battery from draining. You have a couple of options. You can come drive the vehicle every couple of weeks, or just disconnect the battery by unplugging the negative battery cable.
  • Use wheel chocks to keep the car from moving. (avoid using the parking brake as this can cause abnormal wear to your brake)

Outdoor Cooking Grills

  • Clean the grills thoroughly and spray with a light coating of cooking oil to protect from moisture and rust.
  • You may choose to wrap the grill in protective wrap as an additional protection.
  • Disconnect the gas. (Propane and other gas tanks are not safe to store and not allowed in our units)

Outdoor Furniture

  • Clean it .Moisture and dirt left on the pieces can cause mold and mildew.
  • Make sure any cushions are clean and dry.
  • You may choose to use a sealant or protectant to seal out any moisture.
  • Cover them. You can purchase furniture covers, use items such as plastic sheets, old blankets or shrink wrap.
